In the wee hours of Thursday, a 22-year-old boy died in a road accident at the Signature Bridge, injuring three of his friends. At the Wazirabad section, the bridge spans the Yamuna River, connecting Wazirabad to East Delhi.
The exact cause of the accident has yet to be established, but the reason behind the incident is believed to be over speed. The accident occurred at 4.15 a.m. When four friends, Mohit, Vishal, Rishabh and Yash, went out to have parathas. They placed an order at an eatery in East Delhi, according to police. They planned to go for a ‘ joyride ‘ at the Signature Bridge as the restaurant was overcrowded. Police said the car was being driven by Mohit.
“Mohit was driving the car. He reportedly lost control of the car and rammed it into the divider. Mohit was allegedly not wearing his seat belt and as a result he got thrown out of the car and was severely injured. All four of them were rushed to the nearby hospital where Mohit was declared dead and others were admitted for treatment,” police said.
The Signature Bridge is the first asymmetric cablestayed bridge built by the Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation at a cost of crore Rs 1518.37. The trend of clicking on selfies at the bridge, apart from rash driving, is also a serious issue for the Delhi government.
