Special in Forest Research Institute on Himalaya Day

Himalayan Day was celebrated today in the campus of Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, on this occasion an exhibition was organized which was the development of Himalayas. The exhibition was organized by the Forest Ecology and Climate Change Division, Forest Research Institute, which showcased the work related to research conducted in the Himalayan regions by the various divisions of the institute. The celebration of Himalayan Day was started in the year 2010 by eminent environmentalists. In the year 2014, 09 September was declared as Himalaya Day by the Government of Uttarakhand. The Forest Research Institute is working on various aspects of research to improve and restore Himalayan ecology related to flora and fauna, climate change studies and hydrology of Himalayas. Arun Singh Rawat, Director, Forest Research Institute, taking a keen interest, organized this program with the aim of making all stakeholders and the forest research institute Sama University aware. He also emphasized to make common people and environmental activists aware.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Mohammad Yusuf, Scientist-G and Executive Director. He also informed that due to increasing population, migration and development activities towards urban areas, there are sudden changes in the Himalayan highly sensitive ecosystem. Dr. N. Bala, Head, Forest Ecology and Climate Change Division advised exploring the specificity of Himalayan ecology and options for reducing the burden on the Himalayas and conserving natural resources. Besides, the works being done by various divisions of the Forest Research Institute to improve the ecology of the Himalayas through tissue culture, culture management, regeneration, were also shown through the poster. In this program, the students of the University of V.A.M. also participated extensively. The exhibition organized on the occasion of Himalaya Day was also kept open for the public and visitors.
