Bhupathi Amman’s 700-year-old idol, which was stolen from Madurai’s Melur temple in 1915, was recently recovered from an old house. The idol was found hidden within the wall of the man’s old house that stole the idol over a hundred years ago.
According to a report, one of the temple’s two priests, identified as Karuppasamy, stolen the 700-year-old idol. The priest had stolen the idol after an argument with the other priest at the temple. A complaint was lodged with the British police force in 1915.
Now, the grandson of Karuppasamy took it upon himself to correct the deed of his grandfather, which he believes the family has spelled doom. According to Murugesan, the temple priest’s 60-year-old grandson, several generations of the family have suffered since the idol was stolen more than a century ago. Many family members have apparently died as a result of the “goddess ‘ wrath,” the report said.
Six months ago, Murugesan revealed the family secret and said that the idol was concealed in a wall in the house for all these years. Murugesan came across the idol after he became suspicious of his grandfather, who would only pray in front of the wall where he hid the idol, said the reports.
